| In her political biography SINthia Knight shares with
us those obligatory things we expect in a candidate's book. She was
influenced by Minnesota's Governor Jesse Ventura, she never been caught taking a stand,
she's a
policy wonk on the Dan Quayle legacy and, she tells us, her visionary
leadership will lead a national jihad against other people getting
rich.
All of this comes as no great surprise. This is the public Knight we've known for years. Yet this book also provides a glimpse into the real Knight, the private one we barely know. We learn that the pivotal moment in this candidate's life occurred when he was a boy, "My life's path was set during the 3rd grade field trip when we visited a group of seniors. I was mesmerized. What dedication and sacrifice. I vowed at that moment that mine would be a life devoted to public service." But not, alas, to memorable sloganeering... The battle cry "It's other people getting rich stupid" exposes Knight as a candidate for whom substance is an elective. And yet there she is, looming large on the American scene, a presence as assuredly white-bread as Regis Philbin. Perhaps her candidacy, and his book, are more a reflection of America than of Knight herself. | ||||
